    Why not just pour concrete

    Poured concrete is cheaper on day one and it is the reason so many Phoenix pool decks look tired at year twelve. Arizona thermal cycling cracks slabs, and a cracked slab can only be patched, not repaired.

    Pavers and travertine move with the ground instead of fighting it. A settled area gets lifted and re-set. A stained piece gets swapped. The deck can be maintained rather than replaced.

    The part that decides whether it lasts

    Base preparation. Four to six inches of properly compacted aggregate, correct bedding sand, and real edge restraint. Decks that ripple and settle after two summers were almost always installed on inadequate base by someone bidding to a number.

    Drainage is the other half. A pool deck that pitches toward the house instead of away from it will move water into the foundation every monsoon, and no material choice fixes that.
