Desert landscaping, designed

The term was coined by Denver Water in 1981, and the method rests on seven principles: planning and design, soil improvement, efficient irrigation, appropriate plant selection, mulching, limited and practical turf areas, and sound maintenance. None of those principles says gravel. None of them says sparse.

In central Arizona the method meets the richest arid plant palette in North America. Sculptural agave and desert spoon, ocotillo that flames red after rain, palo blanco and ironwood for filtered shade, golden barrel clusters, desert grasses that move. The design question is composition, not survival.

The typical Arizona conversion is a truckload of granite, three one-gallon shrubs, and a saguaro standing alone in the middle. It looks unfinished because it is: no structure planting, no layering, no relationship to the architecture, everything the same height forever.

A designed desert landscape works in layers. Trees set the ceiling and manage the west sun. Large sculptural specimens anchor the views from inside the house. Mid-story shrubs and accents build texture, and groundcovers and boulders finish the floor. Plants are placed at the size they will be in five years, boulders are buried a third deep so they read as geology rather than delivery, and lighting makes the whole composition work after dark, which in Phoenix is when the yard gets used.
